ECS,

DIOCESE OF MUNDRI

FROM THE BISHOP’S OFFICE

October 31st 2011

Dear Friends,

Ref: Appeal for funds for the Renovation of Christ Cathedral Church in Mundri, WES.

This is what the Lord Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come for the Lord’s house to be built.’ Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?... “Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but you are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it”… Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored, says the Lord. You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty.  “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house…” (Hag. 1: 2-9, NIV, Italics added).

In this passage God asked His people how they could live in luxury when His house was lying in ruins. In Jewish setting, the Temple was the focal point of Judah’s relationship with God, but it was still demolished during the time of Prophet Haggai. Instead of rebuilding the Temple, the people put their energies into beautifying their own homes. However, the harder the people worked for themselves, the less they had because they ignored their spiritual lives. The same may happen to us.  If we put God first, He will provide for our deepest needs. If we put Him in any other place, all our efforts will be futile. Caring for our physical needs while ignoring our relationship with God will lead to ruin.

And because the people of Israel at this time had not given God first place in their lives, their work was not fruitful or productive, and their material possessions did not satisfy after returning from exile. What choice are we making as South Sudanese after our glorious celebration of well deserved and over due Independence on July 9th 2011?

Certainly we may not all be living in a luxurious house but surely we all have place to live however humble it may be. Yet the house of worship in Mundri remains pathetic as though it is not the place of worshipping the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. Yet He is the Very One Who granted us the peace, liberty, freedom and prosperity over against the decades of oppression, racial discrimination and slavery.

Consequently, with contrite hearts, the members of Christ Cathedral Church in the Diocese of Mundri thoughtfully and prayerfully have decided to attempt to put God first to ensure that God takes pleasure in this house of worship and to “be honored”! As a result, the Cathedral Administration has come up with the estimated Bill of Quantity of about SSP179,032.00 (One hundred seventy nine thousand, and thirty two South Sudanese Pounds only), plans of fund raising, and the actual plans of the renovation for the honour, glory of God and for the good of humanity. It is to be noted that at the event of this writing, about SSP24, 505.00 (Twenty four thousand five hundred and five South Sudanese Pounds only) has already been raised locally by the members of the congregation towards this project.  However we are still too far from realizing the required amount needed for the implementation.

In this regard, we are so delighted to introduce to your esteemed Administration the above-mentioned Committee members and to earnestly appeal for your generous contribution towards this divine task which has eternal implications on all our lives. In the light of this, do feel free to give your generous contribution to any of the below –mentioned individuals who are the bonafide Committee members of this project.

Therefore, we would be most grateful if your esteemed Administration could consider contributing towards this noble task sum reasonable amount (without giving figures) that will enable us to go a long way in accomplishing this project to completion. Nevertheless, the committee is keenly aware of what the Scripture says, “Each man [woman] should give what he [she] has decided in his [her] heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor. 9: 7, NIV). But I know this about you. You are a person who acts on what you believe, because you are a kind and generous person and may the Lord bless you (Prov. 11: 24-25).  And attached herewith is the copy of the Bill of Quantity.

Yours sincerely, in the fellowship of the Gospel.
